Freetown has recalled its ambassador to Guinea, Alimamy Bangura, after Guinean authorities discovered seven suitcases containing a substance suspected to be cocaine in a diplomatic vehicle. The announcement was made on Thursday by Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba.
According to Kabba, the vehicle, belonging to Sierra Leone’s embassy in Guinea, was intercepted on Monday, leading to the arrest of the driver and another occupant on suspicion of drug trafficking. “Given the seriousness of this situation, the government has urgently recalled Ambassador Bangura to Freetown to provide a full report on the incident,” Kabba stated.
The Sierra Leonean government has launched a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the case and to establish accountability. Kabba emphasized that both nations are cooperating in the probe and clarified that Bangura was not in the vehicle at the time and has not been arrested. “There is no evidence suggesting that the ambassador was involved in this trafficking,” he added.
