The 3rd edition of the Badiar Arts and Culture Festival (FESTAB), concluded on December 21, 2024 in Koundara, has highlighted the cultural, social, and economic implications of this event, which has become a must-attend for the region. While the initiative has been met with praise, it has also revealed expectations and challenges to be addressed in future editions.
A Cultural Showcase in Full Evolution
FESTAB has established itself as a flagship event for promoting local traditions. For communities like the Mandinka, often marginalized in the region, this festival provides a platform for expression and inclusion. Ibrahima Camara, a Mandinka from Gaoual, emphasizes this innovative aspect: “Unlike previous editions, this one included more ethnic groups, which represents significant progress. FESTAB has a great future and deserves support to become a permanent institution.”
This inclusiveness marks an important step toward unity and recognition of the diverse ethnic groups in Koundara. However, Camara notes that sustaining this cultural dynamism requires stronger support from local and national authorities.
Between Enthusiasm and Indifference
The enthusiasm generated by FESTAB is not, however, shared by all. Some residents, like a motorcycle mechanic from the Centre 1 district, admit their indifference: “I didn’t participate, it didn’t interest me.”
This disinterest highlights a certain disconnect between the event and a portion of the population. It also underscores the need to better communicate the benefits of FESTAB to unite a larger number of participants.
On the other hand, others, like Mady Sylla, an auto mechanic, see it as an economic opportunity: “The influx of vehicles during the festival boosts our business. Even if there were fewer breakdowns this year than in the previous edition, it remains an important source of income.”
This observation illustrates the indirect but real impact of the event on the local economy, showing that FESTAB goes beyond its cultural vocation to become an economic engine.
Perspectives for Improvement Despite an overall well-received organization, expectations remain for future editions. Mamadou Diouldé Koulibaly, a motorcycle taxi driver, notes a satisfactory mobilization, although it could be improved: “The event went well, without major incidents. We hope for more improvements for the 4th edition.”
This need for improvement concerns several aspects: better organization, wider communication, and a diversification of activities to maintain public interest and enthusiasm.
FESTAB, a Catalyst for the Future
Ultimately, FESTAB positions itself as a potential lever for unity and development in Koundara. Its ability to unite communities, promote local identities, and stimulate the local economy makes it a high-impact initiative. However, its sustainability will depend on the mobilization of authorities and the commitment of citizens to make it a true instrument of social cohesion and cultural influence.
The challenge for future editions will be to capitalize on the achievements while meeting the expressed expectations, so that FESTAB becomes a model of cultural organization in Guinea.
