Nigeria’s women’s rugby league team, the Green Falcons, has achieved a historic milestone by securing a place in the 2025 Rugby League World Series, becoming the first team from the Middle East-Africa (MEA) region to qualify for the prestigious tournament. Their qualification came after a hard-fought MEA Women’s Rugby League World Cup Qualifier against Kenya in Nairobi. Nigeria won the first match 22-14, while Kenya responded with an 8-0 victory in the second, resulting in an aggregate tie at 22-22. The winner was then decided by goal kicks, where Nigeria triumphed by three goals to two, officially booking their spot in the World Series.
This remarkable achievement marks a turning point for women’s rugby in Nigeria and is expected to inspire greater participation and investment in the sport across Africa. With their place secured on the global stage, the Green Falcons now shift their focus to preparing for the highly anticipated competition.
