On Wednesday and Thursday, at least 23 civilians were killed in two separate assaults by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group with links to the Islamic State, in Ituri province, northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The ADF launched armed attacks on the villages of Matoto and Samboko, situated near the Irumu-Mambasa border. In addition to the deaths, around 20 civilians were taken hostage. The rebels also looted and burned numerous homes, intensifying the region’s ongoing security issues.
