Egyptian Medical Team Successfully Diagnoses the First Rare Case of “VEXAS” Disease
Dr. Yousri Aql, head of the Department of Pulmonology at Kasr Al-Ainy Medical School, announced that a specialized medical team had diagnosed the first rare case of “VEXAS” disease in Egypt during the annual conference of the Department of Pulmonology at the medical school.
Dr. Aql explained that VEXAS disease, recently discovered worldwide, presents a major medical challenge due to the rarity of its cases and the complexity of its diagnosis. He expressed pride in the competency of the medical team, who successfully managed and diagnosed the condition with great accuracy. He said, “This achievement would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of our medical team and the exceptional scientific environment provided by Kasr Al-Ainy Medical School.”
Dr. Aql added that diagnosing a rare and complex disease like VEXAS opens the door to further research in this field and strengthens the position of the medical school as a global reference in pulmonology.
Dr. Hossam Salah, a member of the medical team, praised this achievement, saying, “The success of the pulmonology department team, led by Dr. Yousri Aql, in diagnosing this rare case is proof of the high level of expertise of the school’s doctors. This achievement is not only a pride for Kasr Al-Ainy but also for the entire medical system in Egypt.”
According to a report published by the global medical site “Health”, “VEXAS Syndrome” is a blood inflammatory condition that primarily affects the bone marrow and blood, causing symptoms such as painful rashes, inflammation of blood vessels, lungs, joints, and skin. The report also clarified that this disease might be more common than previously thought, especially among men over the age of 50.
Despite its rarity, research has shown that VEXAS disease could affect one in 4,269 men and one in 26,238 women, making this diagnosis a significant medical achievement both locally and globally. According to some media sources, this accomplishment highlights Egyptian medical excellence and significant advances in the field of pulmonology.
