Kenyan President Acknowledges Security Forces Abuses
Kenyan President William Ruto acknowledged on Tuesday the abuses committed by security forces following protests against a series of kidnappings that have shocked the country. These kidnappings have led to accusations against security forces for numerous disappearances after the violent crackdown on anti-government protests in June and July. More than 60 people were reportedly killed during these events, according to non-governmental organizations.
In his New Year speech, Ruto admitted that excessive and extrajudicial actions had been carried out by some members of the security services, while emphasizing that public security must take precedence over individual freedom. He also promised to end the kidnappings, a statement seen by human rights defenders as an acknowledgment of responsibility. Lastly, the president urged parents to take responsibility for their children’s safety.
