Mauritania begins liquefied natural gas production

Mauritania officially launched the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) on Tuesday, starting from the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim offshore platform, a strategic project located between Mauritania and Senegal. Mohamed Ould Malainine Ould Khaled, Mauritania’s Minister of Energy and Petroleum, announced that the first drop of LNG was produced at 5:00 PM local time, marking an important milestone in the exploitation of the region’s gas reserves. This project, operated by the British company BP and the American company Kosmos Energy, is expected to yield an annual production of 2.5 million tons of LNG.

The gas produced will be used both for domestic consumption and for export, strengthening the energy ambitions of both Mauritania and Senegal. This joint venture between the two countries aims to place the region on the global map of liquefied natural gas producers. In addition to diversifying energy supply sources, this project is also expected to stimulate local and regional economies, contributing to the stability and growth of both nations in the energy sector.
