Mass Shooting at a South African Restaurant Leaves Seven Dead
Tragedy struck last Saturday as seven people were killed in a mass shooting at a restaurant in Nelspruit, approximately 340 kilometers from Pretoria, according to local police reports.
Jabu Ndubane, the regional police spokesperson, stated that in the early hours of the day, a group of unidentified gunmen opened fire on a restaurant in Pienaar, near Nelspruit, before fleeing the scene. Six victims, including six men and one woman, died instantly, while another succumbed to injuries later in the hospital. Several others were injured in the attack.
Jackie Maise, an officer for community safety and liaison in Nelspruit, confirmed that two suspects have been arrested and are being interrogated. She also voiced concern over the prevalence of illegal firearms in the region.
South Africa remains one of the world’s most dangerous countries, with only 30% of citizens reporting feeling safe. In the fourth quarter of this year alone, the nation recorded 6,545 murders, according to the Ministry of Police. Minister Bheki Cele revealed during a press briefing that over the past four quarters, South Africa has reported 27,016 murders and 53,061 sexual offenses, underscoring the country’s persistent crime epidemic.
