AU Commission Chair Urges US to Reconsider WHO Withdrawal
Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has expressed deep concern over the United States’ decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO). In a statement published on the African Union’s official website on Wednesday, he urged Washington to reconsider its stance, highlighting the vital role the WHO plays in global health security.
Faki acknowledged the significant contributions of the United States in shaping international health security standards over the past seven decades. He also praised the U.S. for its role in establishing the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), a key institution under the African Union that collaborates closely with the WHO to manage public health emergencies.
Emphasizing the WHO’s indispensable role in addressing global health challenges, Faki called on the U.S. to rethink its decision, stressing that continued cooperation is crucial for maintaining global health security.
