East Africa and the changing face of crime
While the terrorist threat is gradually receding in East Africa, the region is facing new security challenges. Maritime piracy and cybercrime are on the rise again.
Having inflicted serious blows on terrorist groups such as the Shebabs, thanks to strengthened regional cooperation, the countries of the region must now face up to the return of piracy in Somali waters and the rise of cybercrime, which targets critical infrastructures and private individuals.
These new threats highlight the need to constantly adapt security strategies. Developing cybersecurity capabilities, strengthening coastguards and increasing international police cooperation are essential to meet these complex challenges.
In summary, East Africa is facing a changing criminal landscape. While terrorism remains a concern, maritime piracy and cybercrime are now major new challenges for the region’s security and development. A coordinated and appropriate regional response is more necessary than ever.
