UN Warns of Heightened Risk of Escalation in the DRC
The UN has expressed growing concern over the risk of escalating violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the surrounding region, calling the current situation the “highest it has ever been.” The organization warned that without immediate action, the situation could worsen, leading to dire consequences for the people in the eastern DRC.
During the opening of a session of the Human Rights Council, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk cautioned that a military solution would only deepen the conflict. “A broader and deeper conflict would have devastating effects on civilians,” he stated, emphasizing the need to investigate human rights abuses in the eastern part of the country. The council will decide whether to launch a mission to investigate these violations.
