First LNG Production Begins Offshore Senegal and Mauritania
Kosmos Energy, the American company operating the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas field offshore Senegal and Mauritania, announced the commencement of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production on Tuesday, more than a month after the start of crude production. This milestone marks the transition to liquefying the gas, which makes its transport easier and more efficient.
In a statement, Kosmos Energy, in partnership with British BP, confirmed the completion of the first LNG production from the GTA project. The gas was transported to a floating LNG unit, where liquefaction began. The project, located off the Atlantic coast of Senegal and Mauritania, officially started operations on December 31, 2024. The project is expected to produce around 2.5 million tons of LNG per year, marking a significant step in the region’s energy development.
