Arab countries have unanimously rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to place Gaza under American control and expel its population to Egypt and Jordan. This decision was confirmed by Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty during a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on February 10, 2025. In response, Egypt announced an emergency Arab summit on February 27 to address the latest developments concerning the Palestinian issue. The summit was called after consultations with several Arab states, particularly on February 7, and aims to coordinate a collective response to the threats facing Gaza’s future.
On January 25, 2025, President Trump suggested that Egypt and Jordan take in Palestinians from Gaza, followed by a proposal for a complete U.S. takeover of Gaza, including the permanent relocation of its inhabitants. This plan undermines their right of return and has sparked strong opposition from Arab nations. Congolese political analyst Sadio Morel-Kanté believes this strategy may isolate the United States internationally, as other countries could seek to reduce their dependence on U.S. influence, thereby weakening its global power.
Meanwhile, Gaza continues to endure an Israeli military offensive, which has resulted in over 47,000 Palestinian deaths over the past 16 months, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. Although a fragile ceasefire has been established, tensions remain high. The upcoming Arab summit on February 27 will be crucial in defining a unified Arab response to these challenges and reinforcing support for the Palestinian cause.
