African Union: Success of Morocco and its allies in electing Ali Mahamoud Youssef of Djibouti as President
The electoral process for the Vice-Chairmanship of the African Union concluded following six closely contested rounds, with the outcomes of the votes either being tied or separated by a margin of 2 to 4 votes.
However, it was observed by all the participating delegations that there was a marked distinction between the Moroccan candidate and the other contenders, particularly the Algerian candidate, with regard to their background, the relevance of their vision, and the quality of their presentation to the Heads of State.
It is noteworthy that during the voting process, six countries that are friendly and unconditional allies of Morocco, namely Gabon, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea and Sudan, were unable to participate due to their suspension. Their involvement would have significantly influenced the outcome.
Morocco continues to maintain a strong presence within this institution through Mr. Fathallah Sijilmassi, Director General and third-ranking official of the Organization.
Morocco and its allies have also succeeded in electing Ali Mahamoud Youssef of Djibouti as President of the Commission, a country which supports the Kingdom’s territorial integrity and has opened a consulate in Dakhla.
