Mali: Over 40 Dead in Collapse of Artisanal Gold Mine
More than 40 people lost their lives on Saturday due to the collapse of an artisanal gold mine in the Dabiya commune, located in the municipality of Talato, in the Kayes region of western Mali.
The rescue operations were severely hindered by the lack of adequate infrastructure in the region, making it difficult to attend to the injured, according to local sources.
This tragic incident comes just days after a similar accident in the Kangaba circle, where over 15 people died following a landslide in an old mine operated by Chinese operators. Open-pit mines in the area continue to pose a latent danger due to the absence of urgent and effective measures from local authorities.
