Ugandan Opposition Leader Besigye Kept in Detention Despite Health Deterioration

A Ugandan court has refused to grant bail to opposition leader Kizza Besigye on medical grounds, despite his visibly weakened state. The 68-year-old, a longtime critic of President Yoweri Museveni’s nearly four-decade rule, remains in detention alongside two co-accused as he awaits a final ruling on his request by February 25.

Besigye, who was reportedly abducted in Kenya last November, faces treason charges before a military tribunal. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS, has condemned the trial as a “sham.” Following a hunger strike, Besigye’s health deteriorated, leading to brief hospitalization on Sunday. His lawyers argue that urgent medical attention outside prison is necessary, but the court has so far denied his release.
