Berlin announced on yesterday the suspension of new development aid to Rwanda due to the ongoing offensive by the M23 rebel group in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). According to UN experts, the rebel group receives support from Rwandan troops.
In an official statement, the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development declared that Berlin would halt new financial commitments, reassess its existing cooperation with the Rwandan government, and suspend high-level participation in Rwandan government-led development policy events.
This decision underscores Germany’s stance on the escalating conflict in the DRC, where tensions have risen over alleged foreign involvement in the rebellion. The move is part of broader international efforts to pressure Rwanda into disengaging from the conflict and fostering regional stability.
