Nigeria: 12 Inmates Escape from Central Prison Amid Security Concerns

Twelve inmates managed to escape from Koton Karfe prison in central Nigeria early Monday morning, according to local authorities. The incident once again highlights the persistent vulnerabilities of Nigeria’s penal system, marked by deteriorating infrastructure and chronic overcrowding.

According to the United Nations, Nigerian prisons currently operate at 147% capacity, making them increasingly prone to breakouts.

Femi Fanwo, the Kogi State Commissioner for Information, attributed the escape to “internal compromise and collaboration” within the prison facility. “The circumstances surrounding this escape raise serious concerns and warrant a thorough investigation,” Fanwo stated in an official release.

He added that one of the escapees has already been re-arrested and returned to custody, while efforts are ongoing to recapture the remaining fugitives.
