Fresh tensions are flaring in South Sudan as the armed wing of Vice President Riek Machar’s opposition party accused government forces of launching new attacks on its training camps just outside the capital, Juba. In a statement posted online, Colonel Lam Paul Gabriel reported that on Tuesday afternoon, the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), loyal to President Salva Kiir, targeted the Rambur training center, forcing its closure. Rambur is located northwest of the capital.

This latest incident adds to growing fears of renewed conflict in the world’s youngest nation, which continues to grapple with deep instability years after a brutal civil war. The 2013–2018 conflict between President Kiir and Vice President Machar left nearly 400,000 dead and displaced over four million people. The recurrence of violence so close to the seat of government raises concerns about the fragility of peace efforts and the potential for escalation. As accusations intensify and trust between the parties erodes, South Sudan finds itself once again on the brink, struggling to heal from the scars of its past.
