EU Expresses Deep Concern Over Arrest of South Sudan’s Vice President
Editorial: Africa eye
The European Union expressed deep concern on Friday regarding the arrest of South Sudan’s First Vice President, Riek Machar, by forces loyal to President Salva Kiir, which raises fears of further escalation in the country. “Due to the deteriorating security situation in South Sudan, we have decided to temporarily reduce the presence of our personnel on the ground,” stated Anouar El Anouni, spokesperson for the European Commission. The arrest has sparked significant international concern over the fragile peace process and the potential for renewed conflict in the country.
