A Kenyan UN peacekeeper serving in the Central African Republic was killed in an ambush on Friday in the southeast of the country, marking the second peacekeeper death in 2025, according to a statement released by the United Nations.
Valentine Rugwabiza, the UN Special Representative in the Central African Republic and head of MINUSCA, condemned the attack in the strongest terms on Saturday. The ambush targeted a UN patrol in the Haute-Kotto prefecture and resulted in the death of one Kenyan soldier.
Rugwabiza called on the Central African authorities to take all necessary steps to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice, stressing that such attacks constitute a war crime under international law.
