The U.S. Department of State announced on Tuesday that businessman Massad Boulos, a close associate of former President Donald Trump, will soon travel to several African nations, with a focus on addressing the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Boulos, a Lebanese-American whose son is married to Tiffany Trump, daughter of the former president, has recently been appointed as a special advisor for Africa. This role comes in addition to his existing advisory responsibilities concerning Arab and Middle Eastern affairs, according to an official statement.

His appointment is the latest example of a Trump affiliate taking on a non-traditional diplomatic role. The Department of State confirmed that Boulos will begin his tour on Thursday, with scheduled visits to the DRC, Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda.

His trip comes at a time of heightened instability in eastern Congo, and observers suggest that this mission may carry political and strategic implications for U.S. engagement in the region.
