Boko Haram Resurgence: Rising Threat to Northern Nigeria Amid Intensified Attacks

Editorial : Reda El Ghazal

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum warns that Boko Haram is growing stronger in northeast Nigeria, despite government claims of improved security.

The group has increased attacks on villages, army posts, and police stations, kidnapping people daily. Over 40,000 people have been killed and 2 million displaced since 2009. Recent violence includes an attack killing 20 soldiers and another leaving 40 farmers dead.

Experts say Nigeria’s focus on stopping banditry in the northwest has left Borno vulnerable. Neighboring Niger’s exit from a regional security group has also weakened cross-border efforts. A security analyst, Hamisu Sani, argues defeating Boko Haram requires destroying their networks with better military support.

Zulum urges immediate action to stop the militants’ advances. While the 15-year conflict continues, experts believe sustained military operations could end the insurgency. The governor’s warning highlights the urgent need to protect communities and reverse Boko Haram’s gains.
