Chad:President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno Meets with Catholic Church Delegation to Strengthen Religious Dialogue

As part of ongoing efforts to promote interreligious dialogue and enhance cooperation between the state and religious institutions, the President of the Republic of Chad, Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, held an official audience on Thursday, April 10, 2025, with a delegation from the Catholic Church of Chad.
The delegation was led by Monsignor Martin Waingué Bani, President of the Episcopal Conference of Chad and also President of the Association of Episcopal Conferences of Central Africa (ACERAC). The visit aimed to discuss areas of mutual interest, particularly the upcoming General Assembly of ACERAC, which is set to take place in N’Djamena.
The General Assembly represents a significant platform for consultation among Catholic bishops from Central Africa. The forthcoming session in Chad is viewed as both a symbolic and strategic moment, positioning the country as an active player in religious cooperation and regional stability. The event will gather religious representatives from member states to deliberate on key social, political, and religious issues affecting their communities.
During the meeting, President Déby Itno reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting the Church’s logistical and security needs in preparation for the assembly. He acknowledged the Catholic Church’s role in education, healthcare, and especially in promoting peace and social cohesion, values held dear by the Chadian people.
Monsignor Waingué Bani, in turn, expressed appreciation for the government’s continued attention to the Church’s activities. He emphasized the importance of dialogue between religious institutions and public authorities, especially within a region facing ongoing social and security challenges.
This meeting highlights the growing collaboration between the Chadian state and religious communities, reflecting a shared desire to build a more inclusive, tolerant, and resilient society. The President’s direct engagement underscores the significant contribution of the Church to the country’s development and social unity.
The Catholic delegation left the presidential palace encouraged and committed to ensuring that the upcoming ACERAC summit becomes a memorable success for Chad and the broader Central African region.
