Burkina Faso: Heritage Month Highlights Cultural Treasures of Koumi and Koro
Edited by : Widad wahbi
As part of the ongoing celebration of Burkina Faso’s Heritage Month, the Ministry of Communication, Culture, Arts, and Tourism organized a guided cultural visit to the villages of Koumi and Koro, located near the city of Bobo-Dioulasso, on April 19, 2025.
The event brought together students from Bobo-Dioulasso and a delegation from the Ministry, offering them an opportunity to explore and reconnect with the rich cultural legacy of these two nationally recognized heritage sites.
In Koumi, visitors were especially fascinated by the traditional Bobos dwellings, engaging in discussions with local elders about the customs, social practices, and preservation efforts that have helped maintain the area’s cultural heritage despite increasing urban pressure. Throughout the day, participants learned about Bobo traditions — from rites of passage and funerals to the social organization of the community.
Burkina Faso’s Heritage Month, held from April 18 to May 18, 2025, is part of a national initiative aimed at encouraging citizens to reclaim their history, values, and cultural identity. The Ministry hopes this cultural revival will serve as a strong foundation for self-driven sustainable development that benefits the entire population.
