On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Bakary Yaou Sangaré, presented the country’s evolving diplomatic policy to ambassadors and international envoys accredited in Niamey during a meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Sangaré emphasized that since July 26, 2023, Niger has embarked on a new path towards reclaiming full sovereignty under the leadership of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP). He highlighted the outcomes of the “National Consultations” held in February 2025, which laid the foundation for a state committed to good governance, national dignity, and self-reliant development.

He stressed that Niger’s foreign policy has become more independent and diversified, a shift exemplified by the creation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and its subsequent evolution into a confederation. This, he noted, reflects a strategic orientation toward regional partnerships based on solidarity and shared interests, free from external pressures.

Justice Minister Mr. Alio Daouda also addressed the gathering, reaffirming Niger’s commitment to building relationships founded on mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs. He underscored that while Niger remains open to the world, it seeks fair partnerships that fully respect national sovereignty.

The meeting included an open discussion with representatives of diplomatic missions, who expressed interest in Niger’s new direction. The dialogue reflected Niamey’s determination to open a new chapter in its international relations, signaling a shift toward a more autonomous and regionally focused diplomatic approach.
