AU and EU Leaders Reaffirm Strategic Partnership and Call for Tangible Progress on Shared Priorities

In a key diplomatic encounter this evening, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, met with H.E. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, to review the outcomes of the 3rd AU-EU Ministerial Meeting and explore ways to further strengthen cooperation between the two continental bodies.

The discussions reaffirmed the strategic importance of the AU-EU partnership and emphasized the need to deepen multilateral cooperation on pressing global and regional challenges. Among the shared priorities highlighted were peace and security, stabilization efforts, Africa-led peace support operations, trade expansion, and the development of sustainable infrastructure across the continent.

The AU Commission Chairperson underlined the necessity of translating the EU-Africa Global Gateway Investment Package into concrete, measurable outcomes that align with Africa’s own development agenda. This includes ensuring that investments support African-led initiatives and reflect the continent’s priorities in achieving economic resilience, inclusive growth, and long-term sustainability.

Both leaders reiterated their commitment to a balanced and respectful partnership, grounded in mutual accountability and long-term strategic cooperation.
