UNMISS Hands Over Election HQ in Central Equatoria to Boost 2025 Vote Prep
Edited by: Widad WAHBI
In a significant step toward strengthening South Sudan’s electoral infrastructure, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), in collaboration with its international partners, has officially handed over a newly constructed headquarters to the Central Equatoria State Election Commission. The move is intended to support preparations for what could become South Sudan’s first democratic elections since gaining independence in 2011.
The facility aims to enhance the operational capacity of the National Elections Commission (NEC), enabling it to execute its mandate in fostering a transparent, inclusive, and credible electoral process. The handover underscores ongoing efforts by the international community to support South Sudan’s democratic transition.
Speaking at the ceremony, Darren Nance, representative of the UN Electoral Assistance Team, emphasized the critical need for sustained political, legal, and financial support to ensure that the NEC meets its operational timeline. He warned that delays in fulfilling these foundational requirements could severely impact the integrity and credibility of the upcoming elections.
This development takes place amid international concern over the slow pace of implementing the 2018 peace agreement, especially with regard to the electoral roadmap. Ongoing dialogue between the transitional government and international stakeholders continues to focus on accelerating procedural and technical preparations to avoid further setbacks.
UNMISS has reiterated its commitment to supporting South Sudan’s transitional process. Beyond logistical and technical assistance, the Mission also provides capacity-building support to national institutions, including the NEC, as part of a broader UN initiative to promote peace, stability, and democratic governance across the country.
