Discussed key defense matters during recent high-level talks, Russian and Ethiopian officials focused on implementing existing agreements and enhancing military-technical cooperation. Furthermore, they addressed regional and global security challenges, agreeing to bolster communication channels between their armed forces. Crucially, both sides reaffirmed a shared commitment to constructive dialogue and maintaining vital regional stability, underscoring the positive trajectory of their strategic partnership.

Expanded economic collaboration significantly marks this year’s progress, exemplified by Russia granting Ethiopian banks access to its currency trading platforms alongside Nigeria and Tunisia. Additionally, the two nations actively explore shifting bilateral trade towards their own currencies, a move Ethiopia’s ambassador described as a deliberate step towards greater economic sovereignty and mutual reliance. Concurrently, Russia boosted its soft power presence by launching a major multi-functional editorial center in Addis Ababa.

Established Ethiopia’s intent on the broader international stage, the government confirmed preparations in April to join the BRICS New Development Bank. Subsequently, Ethiopia’s ambassador to Brazil formally verified the membership application, positioning Ethiopia to become the fourth African nation within the NDB framework. Through these steps, encompassing defense, finance, and diplomacy, Russia and Ethiopia demonstrably accelerate their multifaceted alliance.
