Ghana: Opposition Lawmakers Boycott Parliament Over Detention of Key Party Figure

Edited by : Widad WAHBI

Dozens of lawmakers from Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) staged a boycott of Parliament on Thursday in protest over the continued detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, a prominent political figure widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to NPP members of Parliament, Wontumi has been held for 48 hours at the offices of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra, raising concerns about the legality and political motivations behind his detention.

Boasiako is a key figure in the Ashanti Region, a stronghold of the NPP, and his prolonged arrest has sparked tensions within the party ranks. The boycott signals mounting unrest within opposition circles, who accuse authorities of using state institutions to suppress dissent and intimidate political opponents.

No official charges have been announced as of yet, and EOCO has not commented publicly on the matter. The situation continues to develop amid rising political polarization ahead of the upcoming elections.
