Nigeria: Flood Death Toll Surpasses 200, Hundreds Still Missing
Edited by: Widad WAHBI
The death toll from devastating flash floods that swept through central-northern Nigeria last week has climbed to over 200 fatalities, according to authorities, as the search for survivors and bodies continues.
Ahmad Suleiman, the humanitarian coordinator for Niger State, confirmed the grim toll during an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday. “We now have over 200 bodies,” he stated, adding, “No one can currently confirm the exact number of deaths in Niger State, as the search for missing persons is still ongoing.”
The floods, triggered by torrential rains, have wreaked havoc across communities, submerging homes, displacing thousands, and cutting off access to vital infrastructure. Rescue operations have been hampered by the scale of the destruction and poor accessibility in affected rural zones.
Officials warn that the toll could rise significantly as emergency services struggle to reach remote areas and account for the large number of missing residents. The Nigerian government and aid agencies have called for urgent humanitarian support and disaster relief to respond to what is being described as one of the deadliest flooding events in the region’s recent history.
