The Zambian government has declared a seven-day period of national mourning following the death of former President Edgar Lungu, who passed away on Thursday in South Africa at the age of 68.

Mr. Lungu led the southern African nation — a vast yet sparsely populated country of around 19 million people — from January 2015 until August 2021. His presidency came to an end after a decisive electoral defeat to current president Hakainde Hichilema.

The announcement of the national mourning reflects the country’s respect for the late leader’s role in shaping Zambia’s recent political landscape. Further details about memorial services and burial arrangements are expected in the coming days.
