Nigeria: Over a Hundred Killed in Deadly Attack in Central Region
Edited by : Reda El Ghazal
A brutal overnight assault, suspected to be linked to herder-farmer violence, struck the village of Yelewata in Benue State, central Nigeria. The attack occurred between last Friday night and Saturday morning, unleashing a wave of terror that eyewitnesses described as a “massacre.” Local resident Amineh Liapha Hir reported the death toll may have exceeded one hundred, with dozens of homes set ablaze during the rampage.
Multiple residents corroborated the catastrophic loss of life and widespread destruction. This assault intensifies a pattern of intercommunal violence destabilizing the region in recent months, raising alarm among citizens and observers.
Local authorities and Nigerian police confirmed the incident but refrained from disclosing an official death toll or operational details about the assailants’ motives as of last Saturday.
The attack underscores escalating insecurity in Nigeria’s Middle Belt—a region chronically affected by clashes between nomadic herders and farming communities.
