Sierra Leone : Launch of First 5G Network Powered by Renewable Energy

Sierra Leone has officially launched its first fifth-generation (5G) telecommunications network, marking a major step toward digital transformation. The new network will rely primarily on renewable energy sources to power its infrastructure, addressing the country’s limited broadband access, which currently reaches only about 21% of the population.

The project was unveiled during the Digital Government Summit held in the capital, Freetown. It is the result of a partnership between local telecom company Zoodlabs and African renewable energy firm CrossBoundary Energy, which is financing the first phase. This includes the installation of five 5G towers across the capital city. The new network will be powered by solar energy and battery storage systems, with minimal reliance on backup fossil fuel generators.

By using clean energy, the initiative aims to reduce dependence on traditional power sources in a country where electricity supply is unstable and fuel costs are high. Project leaders hope the 5G network will enhance internet quality and open new opportunities in sectors such as telemedicine, smart city applications, and high-speed connectivity.

The move comes as 5G technology is gradually expanding across Africa. According to Omdia, 5G penetration on the continent reached 1.4% in 2024 and is projected to climb to 25% by 2029.
