Côte d’Ivoire: President Alassane Ouattara Nominated by His Party for 2025 Presidential Election

Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, who has been in power since 2011, was officially nominated on Saturday 21  evening by his political party, the Rassemblement des Houphouëtistes pour la Démocratie et la Paix (RHDP), as their candidate for the upcoming October 2025 presidential election.

The nomination, announced during the party’s national congress in Abidjan, marks a significant political moment — yet Ouattara has not confirmed whether he will run for a fourth term.

“I hereby submit to the Congress for approval the nomination of President Alassane Ouattara as the RHDP’s candidate for the October 2025 elections,” declared Patrick Achi, president of the RHDP congress.

The announcement was met with resounding applause and unanimous acclamation from party members, demonstrating strong internal support for the 82-year-old leader.

President Ouattara’s silence on his candidacy keeps the political climate in suspense, especially as debates over presidential term limits and democratic transition continue to dominate Ivorian public discourse.

Ouattara was first elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2015. In 2020, he pursued a controversial third term, arguing that a constitutional change had reset the term count — a decision that sparked protests and political unrest.

As the 2025 election draws near, the country’s political future may again hinge on whether Ouattara chooses to run — or opens the path for a new RHDP figure.
