Rwanda–DRC Peace Deal Backed by Trump
Edited By: Widad Wahbi
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda have signed a peace agreement deemed “historic” in Washington, under the impetus of the United States. This agreement aims to put an end to more than thirty years of conflict in eastern DRC, marked by insecurity, armed violence, and a severe humanitarian crisis. Overseen by the Trump administration, the agreement notably provides for an end to hostilities, respect for territorial integrity, the neutralization of the FDLR, and the conditional integration of non-state armed groups. Although it raises hopes for a turning point toward peace, some voices are already criticizing its shortcomings, particularly regarding justice for victims of human rights violations.
