CAF Launches Investigation into Algeria’s Controversial Actions at Women’s AFCON 2024

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened a formal investigation into Algeria’s women’s national team over alleged breaches of CAF Statutes and Regulations during the ongoing 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, hosted by Morocco.

According to reports published by Africa Eye, a series of actions by the Algerian squad since the start of the tournament have been deemed incompatible with the principles of fair play and African unity – values championed by CAF.

Specifically, the Algerian team is accused of deliberately refusing to participate in the official pre-match photo alongside the host nation, Morocco. Additionally, the team reportedly circulated a modified version of the tournament’s official logo, with the reference to the host country deliberately removed.

These incidents are being viewed as symbolic violations that undermine the integrity of the tournament and question CAF’s authority as the governing body of African football. They have also raised concerns over the politicization of a sporting event meant to promote unity, equality, and solidarity across the continent.

By opening this investigation, CAF reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding the spirit of sport, ensuring all member federations comply with tournament regulations, and maintaining the Women’s AFCON as a space for unity and celebration — free from political discord.
