UN Warns of Escalating Gang Violence and Mass Displacement in Haiti

A United Nations report has raised alarm over rising gang violence in Haiti, with over 1,000 deaths and mass displacement recorded since October 2024. While Port-au-Prince remains the epicenter, violence is now rapidly spreading into rural areas, where state presence is nearly absent, prompting fears of further collapse in national stability.

The UN also warns of serious human rights abuses committed by self-defence groups, initially formed to counter gangs but now reportedly involved in violations themselves. A deadly attack in Pont-Sondé, Lower Artibonite, marked a major escalation, followed by brutal assaults and the complete flight of all 100,000 residents from Mirebalais in the Centre department earlier this year.

With the humanitarian crisis deepening, the UN is urging international intervention to restore security and protect civilians. “The situation is deteriorating fast, and coordinated global action is needed before more lives are lost,” said Ravina Shamdasani, UN human rights spokesperson.
