Today, the Cameroonian government and Aéroports du Cameroun (ADC) officially approved a long-awaited overhaul of Douala International Airport, which handles approximately 80 % of the country’s international air traffic. The project, originally conceived in 2018 and confirmed in November 2024, will upgrade the aging terminal at an estimated cost of 66 billion CFA francs (about €100.6 million).

The extensive renovation will modernize existing facilities and enhance capacity to serve growing passenger volumes. Currently, the airport offers direct flights to 23 destinations across 17 countries. The upgrade aims both to improve travel experience and to meet rising standards set by regional hubs such as Abidjan and Addis Ababa, positioning Douala for stronger regional connectivity.

Financing will be secured through public-private partnerships, including support from ADC and international investors. The ambitious timetable sets the first phase for completion by the end of 2027, with subsequent stages following. In the coming months, ADC will launch tenders for construction firms, signaling a firm commitment to transform Douala into a modern gateway rivaling its West and East African counterparts.
