On July 15, 2025, Gabon officially regained its status as a full member of the Commonwealth, less than two years after its partial suspension in September 2023.

The decision was announced following an extraordinary session of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG), which praised Gabon for its “return to constitutional order” and the successful organization of a credible and inclusive presidential election held on April 12. Observers from the Commonwealth recognized the transparency and legitimacy of the vote.

Gabon’s reinstatement follows a series of key reforms undertaken during the political transition. At the forefront is the adoption of a new Constitution, approved by referendum, which officially established the Fifth Republic. Transitional authorities also submitted a memorandum highlighting these democratic advances and the upcoming legislative and local elections.

Transitional President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema welcomed the decision as an “international recognition of the progress achieved,” affirming that “Gabon is fully returning to the Commonwealth family.”

The next legislative and municipal elections are scheduled for September 27, 2025, with a runoff on October 11. These elections will serve as a critical milestone to consolidate the country’s institutional normalization and political stability.

In parallel, Gabon has also been readmitted to the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the African Union, marking a significant step in its diplomatic reintegration both regionally and internationally.
