UK Transfers Baydhabo Military Base to Bolster Somalia’s Security Capabilities

The Minister of Defense of the Federal Government of Somalia, Ahmed Macallin Fiqi, has officially assumed control of a military training facility in Baydhabo that was established and supported by the United Kingdom. The handover took place following discussions with UK Ambassador to Somalia Charles Nicholas King and senior British officials, during which both sides emphasized the importance of continuing defense cooperation.

The facility, now under the full authority of Somalia’s Ministry of Defense, is expected to contribute to the training and professionalization of Somali National Army personnel, particularly those deployed in the South-West region. Its strategic role aligns with broader efforts to enhance national defense capabilities and respond more effectively to ongoing security threats. The move also reflects Somalia’s efforts to consolidate its military infrastructure and reduce dependency on external management.

Minister Fiqi acknowledged the UK’s sustained support in strengthening Somalia’s armed forces, viewing the transfer as a step forward in building an autonomous and capable defense system. As Somalia continues to face complex security challenges, the evolving partnership with the UK underscores a shared interest in promoting regional stability and supporting long-term state-building efforts.
