Zimbabwe Secures Historic Rugby World Cup Return After 33 Years

Zimbabwe’s national rugby team, the Sables, have booked their place at the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, marking their first qualification since 1991. The victory came after a thrilling 30–28 win over Namibia in the final of the Rugby Africa Cup held in Kampala, Uganda.

This achievement marks Zimbabwe’s third appearance at the World Cup. They previously participated in the inaugural tournament in 1987 and returned in 1991, both times as Africa’s representatives.

Saturday’s final was a dramatic encounter. Tied at 16-16 by halftime, Zimbabwe surged ahead with second-half tries from Godfrey Muzanargwo and Brandon Mudzekenyedzi. The defending champions looked in control until Namibia clawed back into the game with tries from Jay-Cee Nel and Adriaan Booysen, narrowing the margin to just two points with 10 minutes to play.

Namibia, led by former Saracens star Jacques Burger, had one last chance to steal victory, but substitute Tiaan Swanepoel missed a long-range penalty in the 79th minute, sealing Zimbabwe’s historic win.

The defeat ends Namibia’s seven-tournament streak at the Rugby World Cup. Since 1999, they had been Africa’s consistent qualifier, alongside tournament giants South Africa. Ivory Coast remains the only other African team to have qualified, back in 1995.

While Zimbabwe celebrates, Namibia still has a lifeline. They will face the United Arab Emirates, runners-up at the Asia Rugby Men’s Championship, in a crucial play-off next Saturday. The winner will advance to the Final Qualification Tournament in Dubai this November.

The Sables now join South Africa as Africa’s confirmed representatives at the 2027 tournament, reigniting hopes of a new era for Zimbabwean rugby on the world stage.
