Ghana is in mourning following the death of iconic highlife musician Daddy Lumba, who passed away on Saturday, July 26 at the age of 60 after a short illness. The announcement was made by the family’s lawyer, Fati Ali Yallah, who expressed deep grief on behalf of the family and associates.
Born Charles Kojo Fosu, Daddy Lumba leaves behind a four-decade legacy that helped shape the Ghanaian highlife genre, blending traditional rhythms with modern influences to craft songs that became anthems across generations.
President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to honour the artist with a dignified state funeral, in accordance with public calls for national recognition of Lumba’s contribution to Ghana’s cultural and musical heritage.
“Lumba’s unmatched musical genius provided the soundtrack to our lives,” President Mahama wrote in a tribute shared on X. “The beats to his memorable songs may have died down, but his enduring legacy will echo through the ages.”
Daddy Lumba’s manager, Philip Appiah-Kubi, confirmed the president’s intention to lead the state funeral arrangements. “President Mahama has always been a friend to the creative arts and deeply admired Daddy Lumba’s influence on Ghanaian music,” he said.
Lumba’s death follows just weeks after one of his final public appearances, where he met President Mahama at an event honouring senior citizens in Accra. In 2024, the artist was awarded the President’s Grand Medal for his service to the nation.
Over the course of his illustrious career, Daddy Lumba released 33 albums, earning both local and international acclaim. One of his biggest hits, ‘Mpempem Do Me’ (2008), recently returned to global prominence after being featured on King Charles III’s official playlist.
Details of his funeral arrangements and the official cause of death remain confidential at this time, according to the family.
