East Africa Makes History as Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda Co-Host CHAN 2024

For the first time since 1976, East Africa is hosting a major CAF tournament. The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) kicked off this weekend, jointly organized by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda — marking the first-ever co-hosting of the tournament by three countries.

Running through August 30, the CHAN spotlights homegrown talent, as only players active in their national leagues are eligible. The event also serves as a dress rehearsal for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be hosted by the same trio of nations.

Preparations were far from easy. CAF had to delay the tournament to allow more time for stadium renovations. However, its most recent inspection in Nairobi was met with optimism, and the Confederation praised the coordination between the host countries.

On the pitch, Tanzania launched the competition with a match against Burkina Faso in Dar es Salaam. Morocco, the two-time champion and tournament favorite, is making its return after withdrawing from the 2023 edition.

Kenya enters the championship under the guidance of Benni McCarthy, former South African international and assistant coach at Manchester United. Uganda hopes to advance beyond the group stage for the first time, relying on the experience of former captain and now goalkeeping coach Denis Onyango.

Meanwhile, defending champions Senegal are set to clash with Nigeria in a highly anticipated West African showdown on August 5 in Zanzibar.

Beyond the competition, this edition of CHAN holds deep symbolic value — highlighting regional cooperation and reaffirming Africa’s growing capability to host continental sporting events.
