The government of Mali has announced the safe release of four Moroccan truck drivers who had been kidnapped in January 2025 near Burkina Faso’s northeastern border with Niger.

According to a government statement broadcast on Malian state television on Monday, the drivers were abducted on January 18, 2025, and had been held by the Islamic State in the Sahel Province, the regional affiliate of the terror group known as Daesh.

The successful operation was the result of coordinated efforts between Mali’s National State Security Agency and Morocco’s General Directorate of Studies and Documentation (DGED). Both agencies have worked jointly and diligently on the case since the initial hours of the kidnapping.

The Malian government praised the professionalism and determination of the security services involved, noting that the four Moroccan nationals were freed unharmed on Sunday evening, August 3.
