Ethiopia Names New Ambassador to Somalia as Diplomatic Relations Warm

In a further sign of improving diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Somalia, Ethiopian diplomat Suleiman Dedefo officially presented his credentials on Tuesday to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Mogadishu.

This move follows months of tension between the two neighboring countries, sparked by Ethiopia’s controversial agreement with Somaliland—a self-declared republic that Somalia views as part of its territory. The deal, aimed at granting Ethiopia access to the Red Sea, was harshly criticized by Somalia, which accused Addis Ababa of infringing upon its sovereignty.

However, tensions have gradually eased thanks to diplomatic mediation led by Turkey. In December 2024, both countries signed the Ankara Declaration, a Turkish-facilitated agreement that helped de-escalate the crisis and opened the door for renewed dialogue.

The agreement included a pledge to engage in further discussions regarding Ethiopia’s maritime access ambitions, a longstanding strategic concern for the landlocked country.

Earlier this year, relations hit a low point when Somalia expelled the Ethiopian ambassador in April 2024, declaring him persona non grata and giving him 72 hours to leave.

Dedefo’s appointment now marks a fresh start in Ethiopia-Somalia ties, signaling a willingness from both sides to move forward through dialogue and diplomatic engagement
