Algeria Set to Receive Advanced Russian Su-34M Fighter Jets

According to an article on The Defense Post, Russia has begun production of the supersonic Su-34M fighter jets destined for Algeria, confirming earlier reports of a significant military deal between Moscow and an undisclosed partner.

Satellite imagery and open-source data analyzed by the South Korean magazine Military Watch have revealed a small batch of Su-34Ms painted in distinctive desert camouflage—brown and yellow tones tailored to Algerian terrain—matching Algeria’s previous air force patterns. This strongly suggests that these jets are indeed intended for Algeria.

While the report mentions Algeria and North Korea as potential buyers, the camouflage pattern and past procurement history heavily favor Algeria as the primary recipient, with production of the initial export batch already underway.

The deal dates back to December 2019, when Algerian defense sources announced a contract with Russia to purchase 14 Su-34Ms, 14 Su-57s, and 14 Su-35s, with deliveries scheduled through 2025, according to Business Insider Africa.

This acquisition is set to replace the Su-24Ms that Algeria’s air force has operated since the 1990s, making Algeria the very first export customer for the Su-34M model. The deal further solidifies Algeria’s position as Africa’s strongest air force and underscores the growing reach of Russian military influence across the continent.

With a competitive unit price estimated under $10 million, the Su-34M provides Algeria an opportunity to upgrade its fleet with advanced combat capabilities at a cost-effective price. Thanks to its extended range and capacity to carry long-range missiles, the aircraft will enable Algeria to project air power well beyond North Africa, reaching as far as the Arabian Gulf and central Europe.
