U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the Trump’s administration is actively considering steps to classify the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.

Rubio emphasized that the process involves complex legal and administrative procedures, requiring thorough review before any final decision is made, and confirmed that the issue is a priority on the State Department’s agenda.

Speaking on the radio program Sid & Friends in the Morning on Tuesday, Rubio described the Muslim Brotherhood as a “significant concern” for the United States, noting that his department regularly reviews lists of groups suspected of supporting or engaging in terrorist activities.

He added that the last comprehensive assessment of such organizations had not been conducted for some time, and current efforts aim to fill gaps in previous reviews to ensure decisions are accurate and objective. The recent review process has included multiple organizations, with particular attention on the Muslim Brotherhood due to the perceived security challenges it poses. Rubio stressed that any designation would be based on thorough intelligence and field analysis alongside political considerations.

These statements come amid a tense domestic political environment in the United States. Republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas recently called on the IRS to investigate the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and reconsider its tax-exempt status, citing alleged links to groups classified as terrorist organizations, including the Muslim Brotherhood.

If the designation is approved, it is expected to have wide-ranging political implications, particularly affecting U.S. relations with its Middle Eastern allies. The Muslim Brotherhood continues to play an influential role in the political and social landscape across the region.
