Angola secured their 12th continental crown at Afrobasket 2025, defeating Mali 70–43 in Sunday’s final on home soil. The victory reaffirms Angola’s dominance in African basketball, while Mali’s historic run to the final earned them their first-ever silver medal.

The hosts set the tone early, edging ahead 14–10 in the first quarter and extending their lead to 32–20 by halftime through disciplined defense and sharp shooting. Backed by a roaring home crowd in Luanda, Angola maintained control throughout the second half, sealing a comfortable 27-point win.

Despite the loss, Mali’s performance was groundbreaking. Reaching the final for the first time since the competition’s inception in 1962, they surpassed their previous best result—third place in 1972. Their silver medal marks a milestone in the team’s steady rise and consistency on the continental stage.

In the third-place playoff, Senegal overpowered Cameroon 98–72 to claim the bronze medal. Angola had earlier edged Cameroon 74–73 in a thrilling semifinal to reach the final.

Organized by FIBA Africa since 1962, Afrobasket is the continent’s premier basketball competition, serving as a qualifier for the World Cup and the Olympic Games. Beyond the medals, the tournament plays a pivotal role in developing the sport across Africa by attracting professional talent and strengthening national federations.
