Gabon’s President Oligui Nguema Slams Rejection of Legislative Candidates

Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has strongly criticized the exclusion of several candidates from the upcoming legislative and local elections scheduled for September 27, 2025.
In a statement read by one of his advisers on Saturday, Oligui Nguema sided with the disqualified candidates, who have accused the Interior Ministry of opacity and unfair practices in organizing the vote. “These practices are unacceptable,” the president declared.
He denounced what he described as “unacceptable irregularities” that undermine the fairness of the electoral process and “erode the foundations of Gabonese democracy.” Emphasizing that transparency, rigor, and adherence to republican rules are non-negotiable, he urged the competent authorities to “fulfill their responsibilities with diligence and impartiality” to ensure credible elections.
Oligui Nguema, who won strong support in the April presidential election, insisted that the upcoming polls must be held under the same conditions of integrity, transparency, and peace. “Let us stay the course,” he urged.
Dozens of candidates have already been barred from running in the September vote, sparking frustration and anger among the political class.
